Infinite cell

Iron bars, painted wood, mirrors

A sequence of mirrors, infinitely reflecting an image of prison bars,

Jaar uses mirrors in this photograph as it is an everyday item which is used by the everyday person. The jail bars and the mirror show the idea that society is stuck in a “jail/ Claustrophobic” like situation.  This shows the emotion of fear whilst in captivity. Captivity is shown to be about the wealth and consumption for a more contemporary society.

Andeas Gursky

99 cent store

This image talks about how consumers are overpowered by commercialism. The intensely bright colors, orginisation and perfectly stacked shelves makes everything glamorized and shows us the idea of perfection.  The way this was photographed on a high angle is showing us that as consumers we don’t understand quite how perfect and artistic some things are. This image was shown on an extremly large scale, as it then has the detail. This very photograph I the most exxpensive piece of photography ever sold, it has been sold for $3.34 Million dollars (US).

Cildo Meireles

The Coca Cola Project

Glass Coke battles, coke and text

The artist has put “Yankees go home” on these reusable coca cola bottles and has put them out so they are in circuit of being re filled and put back out on the shelves. This image is about consumerism, when he wrote that on the bottles it seems to be impying that New York is target. Iswell as Coca Cola, it is the largest world wide brand and is worth more than any other company.New York is globally known for its consumerisim. This photograph is also about how we look at the gass being half full or half empty. It relates to consumerism as each bottle has one fifth less than the previous bottle.

Tracey Moffat

1997

Tracey Moffat was born in Australia and was adopted out of her Aboriginal family into a wite working class family. So she has a personal relationship with these images. The various camera angels relates to each image as she was actually in the image, a point of view. To me it seems like it might be a brief storyline of her life, as the photos with the child could be her. In the photographs nuns taking her away and giver her to a different family and then once she has arrived at her new family the nuns leave.
